In the coastal plain of the Perth metropolitan area, use of double brick construction is most common in domestic housing. There is a limited market for roofing timbers, which on average is about 5 to 6 cubic metres. Use of native hardwood timbers such as jarrah and karri is decreasing, more pine is being used, and steel has about 20 per cent of the market.
Pine timber is commonly used for extensions where a second storey is added to an existing structure.
In comparison, in the Eastern States most houses are brick veneer with pine frames and prefabricated pine roof trusses.
