Why buy sustainable?

Simple – because it ensures the timber you buy has been ethically harvested, from sustainable forests using methods that protect the longevity of the forest and those who depend on it.

Identifying sustainably sourced timber

When buying timber, timber products and paper, look for these logos:

Logo for the Australian Forestry Standard Logo of the Program for Endorsment of Forestry Certifications Logo of the Forest Stewardship Council

If the product you have under consideration to buy has any of the above three logos, you can be assured that;

  • It has come from a sustainable, well-managed forest.
  • Every precaution has been taken to protect human beings, animals, property, forests and the environment.
  • Compliance to the standard is independently audited and certified on a regular basis.
  • Ongoing monitoring, review and compliance is undertaken to ensure compliance with the relevant certification.
  • Forest certification schemes generally require that forest management practices conform to standards much stricter than those required by law and government regulations.

Some companies also certify their environmental management systems to the International Standard IS014001. Like both AFS/PEFC and FSC, compliance with the standard ensures a structured approach to the planning and implementation of environmental protection measures.
