Synergy
In 2008, Synergy, Western Australia’s largest energy retailer and primary power supplier in the south west of WA, partnered with FPC to deliver a 5,000 hectare tree planting project in winter 2009.
Synergy recognised the need to offset its carbon footprint and produce tradeable permits for a proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. All rights to the carbon pollution permits, resulting from the project, are retained by Synergy.
In excess of six and a half million trees were planted throughout the medium to lower rainfall regions under a commercial contract with individual landowners.
Tree plantings create long-term carbon sinks and they are an important component in reducing Western Australia’s overall greenhouse footprint, whilst addressing other environmental issues such as salinity, caused by over-clearing of native vegetation on farms.
